Five ways to convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac
Macs open HEIC photos without any trouble, but the people, websites and print services you send them to often can’t. This guide shows the quickest ways to convert HEIC to JPG Mac users already have built in – Preview, Finder, Photos and Terminal – plus a free browser converter for large batches. Every method works on a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac mini.
1. Preview: perfect for a single photo
Preview is the default image viewer on macOS and reads HEIC natively.
- Double-click the HEIC file to open it in Preview.
- Choose File › Export.
- Set Format to JPEG, move the quality slider towards Best and click Save.
The same Export menu also offers PNG and PDF. Preview is ideal for one or two images, but repeating these steps for dozens of photos quickly gets tedious.
2. Finder Quick Action: several files in a few clicks
On macOS 12 Monterey and later, Finder has a built-in converter:
- Select the HEIC files in Finder.
- Right-click (or Control-click) and choose Quick Actions › Convert Image.
- Pick JPEG, choose an image size and click Convert to JPEG.
The JPG copies appear next to the originals. This is the fastest built-in option for a small selection.
3. The Photos app
If your iPhone photos sync to the Photos app via iCloud, select them, choose File › Export › Export Photos and set the photo kind to JPEG. This is handy when the pictures only live in your library and not as separate files.
4. Terminal and sips
For people comfortable with the command line, macOS includes sips, a scriptable image tool. To convert a single file:
sips -s format jpeg IMG_0001.HEIC --out IMG_0001.jpg
Combined with a shell loop it can process a whole folder, but you need to be careful with file names and output paths.
5. Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac in your browser
When you have a whole folder of HEIC images – or want control over metadata – the browser converter on this page is often quicker than the built-in tools:
- Open this page in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
- Drag the HEIC files from Finder onto the page, or click “Choose a folder”.
- Click “Download all (ZIP)” and double-click the ZIP in Downloads to unpack it.
Photos are converted in parallel, directly on your Mac, using a WebAssembly build of the open-source libheif library. Nothing is uploaded, there is no limit on the number or size of files and no watermark. The colour profile (Display P3 on recent iPhones) is preserved, so colours look the same as in Photos.
Mac methods to convert HEIC to JPG, compared
| Method | Best for | Many files | Metadata control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preview | One or two photos | No | Limited |
| Finder Quick Action | Small selections | Yes | Limited |
| Photos app | Photos in your library | Yes | Some options |
| sips (Terminal) | Scripts and automation | Yes, with a loop | Limited |
| Browser converter | Large batches, ZIP download | Yes | Keep, remove location, or remove all |
Protect your location when sharing
iPhone photos record the GPS position where they were taken. The browser converter removes it by default while keeping the date, camera and lens information, so photos still sort correctly in any app. Choose “Keep all” or “Remove all” under “Photo info (EXIF)” if you prefer.
Tip: to stop the problem on the iPhone side, go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG, though they take up more space.
